Frequently Asked Questions

Clear, expert answers to your HAZWOPER training questions

OSHA-compliant & field-tested.

General HAZWOPER Information

What is HAZWOPER?

HAZWOPER stands for Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. It’s the OSHA standard (29 CFR 1910.120) that outlines safety requirements for anyone who handles, cleans up, or responds to hazardous materials.

Our training ensures you meet these federal requirements and know how to stay safe around chemicals, spills, and contaminated sites.

Who needs HAZWOPER training?

Any worker or supervisor who might be exposed to hazardous substances on the job must be HAZWOPER certified.

That includes:

    Construction workers

   Site cleanup crews

   Environmental contractors

   ●  Emergency response teams

   Safety managers and supervisors

If you’re unsure which course applies to your role, our team can help you choose the right one.

What are the different HAZWOPER levels?

OSHA recognizes three main HAZWOPER courses:

   ● 40-Hour: For workers regularly exposed to hazardous materials.

   ● 24-Hour: For workers with limited or occasional exposure.

   ● 8-Hour Refresher: Required annually to keep your certification active.

How long is HAZWOPER certification valid?

Your 40-hour or 24-hour HAZWOPER certificate is valid for 12 months.
After that, you’ll need to complete an 8-hour refresher course to stay compliant.
If more than 12 months pass without refresher training, OSHA recommends retaking the full course.

Course Details
& Structure

What’s included in the 40-hour HAZWOPER training?

Our 40-hour course blends classroom instruction and hands-on field drills.

You’ll practice:

PPE use and decontamination

Hazard recognition and control

Air monitoring and spill containment

Emergency response procedures

You’ll leave fully certified and ready for real-world work.

What’s the difference between 40-hour and 24-hour HAZWOPER?

The 40-hour course is for workers who handle hazardous materials directly or work in contaminated zones. The 24-hour course is for workers who visit those sites but have limited exposure.
Both include live, instructor-led training to ensure full OSHA compliance.

What is the 8-hour HAZWOPER Refresher?

The 8-hour course updates you on new OSHA standards, best practices, and safety techniques.
It’s a one-day session designed to keep your skills sharp and your certification valid for another year.

How much hands-on training is included?

Unlike online-only programs, we include 3 full days of field exercises for the 40-hour course (and 1 for the 24-hour). You’ll suit up in PPE, practice spill response, and learn through real-world scenarios — not just slides and quizzes.

Do I have to pass a test?

Yes. OSHA requires students to demonstrate comprehension through a written test and hands-on performance.
Don’t worry — we provide review sessions, coaching, and free retraining if needed. Our pass rate is near 100%.
